What one thing a day means here

Nine nights, two bases, one booked item on the calendar each day. It is usually a guided walk of two to three hours through the sandstone towers, or ninety minutes inside a small working brewery with the tasting at the end. It starts mid-morning and it is finished by early afternoon. What you do with the rest of the light is not on any list we hand you.

The bases are Decin in the north and Turnov in the east. You move once, on day 5, by regional train with one change. Bags travel with you. There is no van and nobody carries anything for you.

Hours already spoken for
About 3 hours on a normal day: the guided item runs two to three hours, plus twenty minutes to reach the meeting point. On day 5 and the last morning it is closer to 5, most of that sitting on a train.
The earliest you must be somewhere
8:40 a.m., and it happens twice in nine nights: day 5 when you change bases, and the final morning when the train back to Prague leaves. The other seven mornings nothing begins before 10 a.m.
The longest stretch that is yours
Roughly 45 hours. Day 7 carries nothing at all, so from about 1 p.m. on day 6 until the walk meets at 10:30 a.m. on day 8 there is no booked minute in it.
Who chooses where you eat
You pick every meal, every evening and every free afternoon; we hand you a sheet of options and no reservations. A guide sets the route and pace for the two to three booked hours, and on day 5 the rail timetable decides: the useful connection is 9:12 a.m. and the next one costs you three hours.
What happens if you skip a day
Skip a day and the day simply gets longer; tell the hotel or tell nobody, nothing else unravels. Walks are reserved per person and paid ahead, so no money comes back on those; a brewery visit refunds in full at 48 hours notice, $18 to $26 per person, and rooms and the rail pass never refund.
Who this shape of day does not suit
People who want all nine days decided in advance will find the afternoons an unwelcome blank, and anyone traveling by themselves should know the group breaks up at 1 p.m. and does not eat together. Both station platforms and both hotels have stairs and no elevator, so a heavy bag or bad knees make this the wrong trip.

The last row costs this company bookings and stays on the page anyway. A shape of day that does not suit you is far cheaper to find out about here than on the third morning.

Inside the $2,190

  • Nine nights in two family-run hotels, one room, two people sharing, breakfast every morning
  • Seven guided items across nine days: five walks in the rock towns, two brewery visits. Groups run four to nine people and the guide works in English
  • A regional rail pass covering both bases and every branch line around them, so changing your mind at 8 a.m. costs nothing
  • Trailhead transfers on the three walking days where the local bus runs twice a day or not at all
  • Park entry at Bohemian Switzerland and at the Prachov rocks, plus the gorge boat when the river is high enough to float it
  • A printed sheet for each base listing useful trains, the last departure back, and the two kitchens that serve after 9 p.m.

Outside the $2,190

  • Airfare into Prague and home again. From the US east coast this has run $680 to $1,140 depending on month, and we price yours after you pick dates
  • Lunch and dinner, nine days of them. Figure $14 to $22 a head in a pub, less in the places that feed the quarry crews
  • The extra brewery visits people add on the two empty days, $18 to $26 each
  • Anything you drink past the two tasting glasses that come with the brewery item
  • Travel insurance, which we neither sell nor arrange. Buy it yourself before you pay the balance
  • Laundry, which becomes a real question on a nine night trip with five walking days

What it costs

from $2,190 per person

Covering
9 nights, one booked item a day, two rail-linked bases.
Assuming
Two people to a room, unless the six rows above say otherwise for your case.
Pushed up by
The month, the grade of room, how late you leave it, and how many of the hours you want somebody else to hold.
Fixed when
An operator puts it in writing with its own name on it. Until then it marks the bottom of a range that genuinely happened.

You settle with the operator, through whatever system they run. This site gathers nothing and no card ever arrives at this company.

Months that hold up, and months that do not

Mid-May to late June is the strongest window. The sandstone is dry, the gorge boat runs, and daylight lasts until nine, which is the whole point of a trip that ends its booked hour at one. September into the first week of October is the same trip with fewer people and colder mornings.

November through March we will talk you out of. The rock paths ice over in the shaded gullies, several ladder sections close, and the boat is pulled from the water. A Bohemia vacation package in February is nine nights of breweries and short gray afternoons, which is a different trip and not this one.

The two weeks either side of the July holidays are the ones we argue about most. The paths queue at the ladders, both bases fill, and the trains you would use at 9 a.m. are standing room. Late August is fine again by the third week.

What is still open

Confirmation settles four things: which of the two bases you start in, whether the two empty days land midweek or at the weekend, whether you want the harder Hruboskalsko walk in place of one brewery visit, and which of the two rooms in the Turnov hotel you take, since one faces the square and is loud until eleven on Fridays. Everything else can move up to fourteen days out.
